Summer’s here and the time is right for moving in the street. As a vegetarian I lean towards the goodies grown in the soil or off a tree but many of these sources have other local foods.
With all of that we can focus on healthy ways to feed or fuel ourselves for the daily move.
The summer is a prime time to eat right and get healthy. The availability of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables gives us the ability to eat all of the best things and the best things for us.
WAYS to GET the FUEL
1.) Farmer’s Markets– In Charlottesville there is a great long time market. It is known as the City Market and is open from April to Halloween on Saturdays off Water Street and at Meade Park on Wednesdays. Info can be found at www.charlottesvilecitymarket.com
2.) There is also a Farmers Market- Tuesday nights in Forest Lakes South
3.) Community Supported Agriculture ( CSA) – these are local farms that grow veggies, fruit and flowers and participants can buy a share which usually is equivalent to a box of mixed veggies and/or flowers. Members are participants in the risk and reward. Sometimes weeks or seasons the shares are a abundant and others a little less. Some farms give members the opportunity to work and in other cases the sell work shares- that members have to put in a set number of hours at the farm. Some CSA farms are:
· Roundabout Farm www.roundaboutfarm.net I have a share with them this year.
· Horse and Buggy Produce, Inc. www.horseandbuggyproduce.com
· Ploughshare Community Farm www.ploughsharecsa.com
4.) Fresh local veggies and fruit at local markets. Most have prominent signs noting local peaches or goodies
5.) Roadside Stands – drive 30 minutes north or south on 29 or East-West on 250 and you will see 1-4 stands on any given Saturday.
6.) Backyard gardens – great fertile clay soil, especially after a little amendment with mulch or sand or manure- grow your own and share with friends- you will be amazed at the ways you can prepare cukes and zukes….
