A popular slogan in locker rooms and gyms in the 80’s has become a warning to the casual/recreational athlete and fitness minded person.
In the hardcore athletic culture NoPainNoGain stood for 1 extra rep or lap. It never actually meant pain in the form of injury; it stood for pushing your limits to get better, stronger and faster.
The recreational athlete may need to improve and get more fit but does not need to go to the extremes that an Olympic athlete, football player or bodybuilder does to achieve success. The slogan addresses the “suffer in training, so you don’t in the game” mentality that works in competitive sports and the military. It can be a good mantra if followed properly with appropriate guidance.
In the Get Moving program there is little room for the No Pain No Gain attitude but we should still get up, get out and sweat a little, move a little and stay healthy.
The next few posts will address this idea and how to improve our health and fitness with minimal NoPainNoGain cheerleading.
